Slow PCs and laptops are a nightmare. Often, there's a simple solution. Since you bought your computer, it's stored lots of unnecessary files and programs, which can slow it down. On top of that, programs have grown as they've been developed, putting more demands on the machine. Clearing out the junk can make a big difference.
In a lot of cases these days, you might find you have perfectly good computer, but you're stuck on an old version of Windows, with no way to upgrade. You are getting dire warnings about security problems, though. Don't worry, there are very cost-effective solutions available. It's possible to convert many older laptops to Chromebooks, or to install Linux. Which is best for you depends on how you use the machine.
If you've got a new tablet, phone or computer, setting it up can be a complicated and tedious process,
especially if you've got an old machine you need to transfer information from. This can take hours, most of which
needs no human intervention. Leave it to me and I'll take care of it for you, ensuring none of your precious photos or
important documents are lost in the process.
It's not just about getting the new machine working. It's also about making sure you know
how to use it, and that it's set up in a way that suits you.
I can also help you set up your new machine to work with your existing devices, like printers, smart TVs and
so on.
As far as getting a new machine goes, it's rarely necessary to buy something brand new. I can help you find a
refurbished machine that will do everything you need, and save you money in the process. Not only that, but
it's better for the planet.
Viruses, malware, hackers, phishing, ransomware... it's easy to get caught out. I can offer advice on how to protect yourself from the bad guys and tools to protect your devices. If you have got caught, I can help you clean up the problem and make you safe again.
Always follow the golden rules, though.
My name is Michael Gilbert, and I've been involved with computers & software industry since the early 1980s. One thing I've learned is that people who know stuff don't realise that most people don't have their knowledge. The amount of jargon is quite horrible.
My goal is to help normal people get the most out of their technology, starting by clearing away the layers of waffle and making sense of what you actually need to know.
I'll come to your place and look at the problem. Generally, it can be sorted fairly easily. As I work within easy reach of home, I don't charge extra for travel, just for the time on site.
"Home" is in Carrig-on-Bannow, so if you're half an hour away or so, that's about right. If you want to bring the machine in to me, the shop is open Wednesday - Saturday, 10am - 1pm and 2pm - 5pm.
If it's more complex – recovering data from a crashed computer, for instance – it's easier for me to take the machine away. That way, I can do other stuff while tedious computer things are happening, so the bill doesn't rack up to horrible levels.
Just note that there are certain physical repairs – broken laptop screens or smashed iPads, for instance – that I don't do. I'll recommend someone who can, though.
